My progress as a writer
When it comes to writing, I know myself as taking my time with getting the work done. I feel like this is because I want the work to be comprehensive and informative while also following the prompt. When it came to writing for college classes, that is when I really saw the difference between me producing ideas on my own versus me being told what must get done. I want to produce my own ideas is difficult to do because I do not see myself as creative or a quick thinker. I take a long time to put my thoughts into words and how that might grab others’ attention. Especially with these past assignments, picking the topic I wrote about was honestly hard to elaborate on. With the research and ethnography essay, I took my time trying to find the right information, certain advice, how it applies to everyone, and how the experience and perspective parts of it play a huge role in trying to set out my message.
When writing essay 1: personal narrative, examining how attitudes towards linguistic standards empower and oppress language users I learned that with my message I wanted to help the reader understand why my topic was chosen and why it is important for people to focus on. With the information I added to my experience, someone helped me understand what I was saying. The person who read my essay expressed to me how they related and had a similar feeling toward what I said about my topic.
When it came to exploring and analyzing, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations they applied to my writing process by setting the overall vibe or feeling with my writing. From Essay 1: Personal Narrative Essay, when I described my experience, it felt informative while also a bit open since I was sharing a scary feeling at the moment, while also providing information and a few things I knew about it, so the experience was proven.
Developing strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing gave me the opportunity to take a step back and examine my work with an open mind for improvement. When writing Essay 1: Personal Narrative Essay, having someone else read and share their thoughts about what I shared about my experience and the information I provided, helped me further explain what I was trying to say. Based on what my partner said to fix or add, helped me ensure that my writing document is free of any mistakes, that its smooth, and/or that the writing will have a solid structure.
Recognizing and practicing key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations were used to make my message more engaging and persuasive in an effective way. Being able to describe my topic in diverse ways helped me understand that the reader can know what is going on. Being descriptive, using real-life examples, and using hooks at the start of the body paragraphs persuade the reader to know why my topic is important.
“Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences.”
- This objective was used in essay 2: research essay. This is because for each body paragraph I discussed specific groups. I talked about college students, kids, something I learned in high school, etc. These groups were chosen because I wanted anyone and everyone to understand my topic based on what I wrote about them.
The course objective “Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.” was mainly used in Essay 2: Research Essay. Being able to locate a variety of information to further prove my topic, was hard at first because I felt like my topic was only 10% out of everything else that gets spoken about in the real world. I wanted to make sure that explaining my topic made sense, while also providing real research so it all ties in together. Writing about fast food seemed boring in all honesty but to get to find the information that I needed to make writing less stressful. I was able to explain my topic, so everyone understands while also providing research to further back it up.
“Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argumentation.”
- Doing this helped me point out the influence of the source on my topic.
“Practice systematic application of citation conventions.”
- Using citations in essay 2 and essay 3, was hard to grasp during the revision process because I wanted to make sure citing was correct based on what style of writing I did (I used MLA). I know citing is important, so it shows the reader what research was used, showing proof of the information that was used, while also giving credit to the author.
